BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Character Model) 20/08/15

Character Progress: Day 8

Whole model is smoothed. Lights and camera added. Ready to be rendered.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Character Model) 19/08/15

Character Progress: Day 7

Created the eyes. Accomplished to replicate it stylistically from the model sheet.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Character Model) 18/08/15

Character Progress: Day 6

Made the sleeves appear hollow with extrusion. Created hands and fitted them into the sleeves.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Character Model) 17/08/15

Character Progress: Day 5

Created the pigtails. Extruded from the head, and then the buns were attached.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Character Model) 13/08/15

Character Progress: Day 4

Adding further detail to the face. Beard is refined with extrusions and fixed topology. Eyebrows are added in. Shape of head is adjusted.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Character Model) 12/08/15

Character Progress: Day 3

Re-positioning the vertices to get a more accurate representation of the face. Forming the eye and forehead area. Added in ears.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Character Model) 11/08/15

Character Progress: Day 2

Extended the torso. Lowered the arms for a Y-pose. Legs and feet created. Head recreated for a better topology. Added in nose.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Character Model) 10/08/15

Character Progress: Day 1

This will involve more complicated shapes. Started with neck > torso > arms > head. The head is proving to be rather difficult. Need to learn how to effectively place the vertices and clean the topology.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Prop) PT03 07/08/15

Prop Progress: Day 8

Prop is completed. Ready for turn-table finish.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Prop) 06/08/15

Prop Progress: Day 7

Back to low-polygon mode to stitch separate vertices. Combining all separate instances.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Prop) 05/08/15

Prop Progress: Day 6

Barrel looks much better now with the reformed 3 areas. Muzzle was extended to the front to give more room for the trigger guard and trigger. (So that Tiny's fingers can fit in)

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Prop) 04/08/15

Prop Progress: Day 5

Remaking the barrel to better resemble the model sheet. Creating it in separate parts.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Prop) 03/08/15

Prop Progress: Day 4

Everything is smoothed. Muzzle and trigger guard completely finished. Extrusion most effective way to create the trigger guard.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Prop) 31/07/15

Prop Progress: Day 3

Grip is smoothed. Muzzle is smoothed. Barrel somewhat finished. Attempting to finish trigger guard.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Prop) 30/07/15

Prop Progress: Day 2

A majority of the gun is created. Only missing the trigger guard and part of the barrel.

BAR06: Build a 3D Character (Prop) 29/07/15

Prop Progress: Day 1

Attempting to get the hang of Maya. Starting with basic shapes for the gun prop: grip and muzzle area.

BAR06: Visual Development PT03 27/07/15

In the original scene:

  • Scene is established with the three thugs outside of the room, about to raid Tony.
  • Cut to Tony at 00:04 with his gun wielded, shouting 'Say hell to my little friend!"
  • Tony fires his grenade launcher
  • Grenade launcher causes an explosion that blows up the door.
  • Explosion pushes thugs back, off of their feet.

The initial idea for the storyboard was:
  • Scene is established with the three thugs outside of the room, about to raid Tiny.
  • Man 1 signals Man 2 and Man 3 to begin the attack
  • Cut to Tiny holding out his hand, moving it from left to right while uttering, "Say hello-"
  • Tiny quickly draws his gun
  • Holding out the gun in a low position towards the thugs, finished his sentence "-to my little friend!"
  • Tiny then fires the seemingly underwhelming gun, which instead exerts a beam ray that causes a massive explosion, destroying the door in front of him and hitting everyone else on the other side.
As of 29/07/15, this idea has been remade from scratch.

Edit: Camera angle changed on first two panels to emphasize the overly dramatic and mysterious nature of the line being uttered. (01/08/15)

PART 2: Character Model Sheet

c) Colour and texture swatches

Palette 1 (Top left) - Standard, simple yet effective. Reminds me of Hitman. Very clean.
Palette 2 (Top right) - Looks Hispanic, almost mafia-like. Probably does not suit the character.
Pallete 3 (Bottom left) - Almost gives a sort of 'detective' vibe. Would not contrast well with the setting, however.
Palette 4 (Bottom right) - A clean-cut business suit. Differs from the generic red, white and black colour scheme for a suit. The colours for the suit are analagous, while the hairbands are complementary to this. This would be the best choice.

PART 2: Character Model Sheet

a) Character turnaround, which includes:
  • Front view of character
  • Side view of character
  • Back view of character
  • Three-Quarter view of character

b) Character poses and facial emotions

BAR06: Visual Development PT01 24/07/15

PART 1: Concept Development

2. Develop a character design for the sequence:

f) Colour concepts exploring a variety of methods to enhance the communication of the sequences genre and the character's personality (minimum 4 concepts).

3. Design a simple prop for the character:

I specifically wanted this weapon to contrast with my protagonist's figure. In the original scene, Tony holds a M-16A1 and presents himself in this very fierce, provocative manner. Much like the presentation of the 'Noisy Cricket' in Men in Black (when Jay receives it from Kay), this gun will seem harmless but in reality, packs quite the punch, which in turn is an implied parody of the original Scarface scene.

The design is much like a combination of the original Noisy Cricket alongside more stereotypical designs for a ray gun (as portrayed below).

PART 1: Concept Development

2. Develop a character design for the sequence:

e) Character sketches exploring your visual style (minimum 8 sketches) and the character's personality (minimum 8 sketches);

Character's personality

I wanted this character to portray a rather welcomed trope in any form of media, that being the 'scary man with the kind heart'. Despite his bulky, hairy figure, Tiny can express every other emotion in a very soft and very human way, as portrayed in this sheet. It'll add to the ironic nature of this design and will enhance its mold into the chosen genre.

PART 1: Concept Development

2. Develop a character design for the sequence:

d) Visual research for the genres you are investigating to help decide on your visual style;

Concept research for character, weapon and background
(Men in Black, Noisy Cricket, Industrial Age/Steampunk Interior Designs)

Visual Style research for character model and artistic approach to backgrounds
(Team Fortress 2, Bioshock and Fallout 3)

BAR06: Visual Development PT01 20/07/15

PART 1: Concept Development

2. Develop a character design for the sequence:

b) A written profile of the character;

Tiny's little brother, Biggie, was always harassed ever since childhood for being a cross-dresser. Despite the harassment, Biggie carried on, proud of his cross-dressing and satisfying his need to wear cute little girl's clothes. Being a large, buff man that wore female clothing, he was then nicknamed 'Lassybeard'. It was not easy for Biggie to carry on with day to day life under the oppression of the public that could not accept him for who he was. And so...he shaved his head.

Out for revenge and to instil justice upon Biggie's bald head, Tiny set out to destroy all those who oppressed his little brother. He hones Lassybeard's pink hairbands in battle to remind him of his cause.

c) A description of the genre you will be translating the character sequence to, including a description of its characteristic visual style;

Sci-Fi Comedy is essentially more so a sub-genre of Science Fiction film that implements comedic elements. Famous examples of such films are Men in Black, Megamind, Spy Kids, Back to the Future and Big Hero 6. Within my sequence in particular, Science Fiction will heavily influence the character's design (slick, black suit) and weapon of choice (energy orb handgun), as well as the environment that he operates in (rusty, steam-punk office). The action and dialogue, however, will be implied with a more comedic nature.

PART 1: Concept Development

2. Develop a character design for the sequence:

a) A summary description of your sequence, including a description of the genre it belongs to and its visual style (an example will be provided);

Tiny's Little Friend is a Sci-Fi Comedy short parodying Scarface's "Say hello to my little friend." scene, where Tony Montana (Al Pacino) shoots down a door in front of him with a grenade launcher, hitting five other people behind it. Scarface is originally a crime film. The scene is set in a rich, posh office both with room and lamp lighting. The palette consists of generally royal colours, such as red, black and gold. This sets the 'gangster mafia' theme of the sequence just before the action ensues.

In Tiny's Little Friend, the scene will be set in a steam-punk scene. The room will instead have a more sepia colour scheme (fit for the Industrial Age), while Tiny will contrast with a more futurists look. Against the other gangsters that have Victorian wear and industrial, steam-powered machinery, Tiny will be wearing a slick black suit, sunglasses and will be wielding a small yet lethal hand-gun that shoots a large orb of energy (referencing to Men in Black's Noisy Cricket gun). As Tiny shouts, "Say hello to my little friend." the door will explode once he fires his weapon.

While seemingly serious, the stark contrast, literal representation of the famous line and reference to the iconic weapon will transform this crime film into a Sci-Fi Comedy.

BAR06: Visual Development PT01 15/07/15

PART 1: Concept Development

1. Choose an iconic film sequence:

Iconic Film scenes:

  • Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Involves 3 characters, would not be ideal. Movement is minimal however.
  • Alien
Could make for a funny comedy but models might become complicated.
  • Scarface
Scene could just contain protagonist, weapon is one prop.

Scarface comedy?
- Towering figure with a cute, tiny gun.

"Say hello to my little friend."
~ Tony Montana, Scarface

  • 1 line
  • Centers on Tony Montana
  • Crime genre
  • Comedy/sci-fi parody?
